Saturday, 23rd September: Great British Beach Clean 2023

The Jump team during the

Our team of over ten enthusiastic individuals converged on the beautiful shores of Weston-super-Mare to commemorate this year's Great British Beach Clean, and what an extraordinary day it turned out to be! In this blog post, we'll delve into the history of this impactful event, share the surprising discoveries we made on what initially appeared to be a pristine beach, and reflect on the sense of togetherness that filled the air.

A Brief History of the Great British Beach Clean

The Great British Beach Clean has a rich environmental stewardship and achievement history. Organized annually by the Marine Conservation Society, this event has played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the precarious state of our coastlines and marine ecosystems. Over the years, it has rallied tens of thousands of dedicated volunteers whose collective efforts have resulted in the removal of countless tons of litter from our precious beaches.

The Deceptive Facade

As we set foot on the beach that sunny morning, the first impression was deceivingly pleasant. I found myself thinking, "Uh oh, it's already clean! We'll spend the morning strolling and chatting rather than cleaning." Little did I know how wrong I would be. It didn't take long to realize that a hidden world of microplastics lay beneath the serene surface, most notably congregating along the high tide line.

A Memorable Morning of Unity and Connection

What made this experience remarkable was the satisfaction of cleaning up the beach and the rare opportunity it provided for our geographically dispersed team to come together. Our company maintains offices in Hertfordshire, Pembrokeshire, and Somerset, with me working remotely from Cornwall. Such gatherings are a rarity for us, making the clean-up event even more special. It allowed us to catch up, exchange stories, and strengthen our bonds as a team. Following the clean-up, we enjoyed a delightful fish and chips lunch on the seafront, adding a classy touch to our day.

Great British Beach Clean 2023: The Power of Collective Action for Environmental Health

Across the United Kingdom, more than 400 beach cleans were organized, bringing together thousands of dedicated participants. These events, including our own Great British Beach Clean adventure in Weston-super-Mare, were a powerful reminder of the remarkable impact that collective action can have on environmental health.

The Strength of Collective Efforts

As we walked along the shoreline, armed with bags and litter-pickers, it became strikingly evident that the challenge of beach pollution was too vast and complex for any individual or organization to conquer alone. The litter scattered across the sands was a testament to the pervasive issue of marine debris. However, it also vividly illustrated the immense potential for change when people unite for a common cause.

Hope and Change Through Collaboration

The Great British Beach Clean provides hope in a world where environmental challenges often seem impossible. It showcases what is possible when we collaborate and set aside our differences. It demonstrates that change is within our grasp and serves as a testament to the profound impact that can be achieved through teamwork, unwavering commitment, and a shared passion for protecting our natural world.

Looking Ahead to Future Initiatives

We are determined in our commitment to positively impacting our communities. In line with this, we plan to host another beach clean-up event next year. However, our dedication extends beyond this annual gathering. We remain committed to contributing at least 20 hours of community volunteering support per team member each year, and we're excited to share our journey with you. Stay tuned for more updates, and watch this space!
